Evaluation(Part 8) - Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

My preliminary task was to create a scene where two people have to meet up using continuity throughout it all. For this task my partner and our friend acted out a scene where one of them is getting late to meet her friend. In this task we used a number of continuity shots such as eye line match, match on action and made sure we had the rule of thirds throughout it. I also used shot reverse shot.

Digital technology

The strengths I had when working with digital technology was that I was confident in using it as I had experience of using the technology in previous work.  I think my main strength would have been in making sure the shots are in the correct framing and there is rule of thirds. One of the weaknesses I had was that there were new versions of software coming out such as movie had updated and changed completely so I had to learn how to use that. I think the improvement I could have made is that I should have made sure that the editing technology was good and I knew how to use it properly.  During making my British social realism film I made sure that the shots and angles were right and I knew how to use the new digital technology.

Rule of thirds. During filming I made sure that the actor's eyes are a third way down the screen to follow this rule.

Creativity
I think the strengths I had in creativity could have been improved as the storyline was very basic and I could have made it something fun. The creativity in a video is quite important as it and makes a film unique or common. My strengths in this would be the framing/shot and angles of the film. I was in charge of filming and I found this quite good as I knew what I was doing and what shots I should use. In my British social realism film I made sure that it was more creative than this piece of work and that it kept to Film 4's ethos.

Production
During the production the challenges I faced were to make sure the camera was in the right position so I could get the right shots. If I made the film again I would make sure I shot all the angles properly and that the rule of thirds applies to all the shots. In the post production I found it a bit difficult to edit because the software I used was a new version of IMovie. I have had some experience with using the old IMovie but the layout and different techniques of editing had change which made my work a bit harder. If I edited again I would add a few better transitions and cut the shots a bit shorter so the whole video is no longer than a minute as the maximum seconds was 60.
My overall strengths would be digital technology as I knew what I was doing.  During the post-production and I did have help with using the new software. I also knew how to use the HD video camera and the tripod. The weakness I had in the planning was deciding what shots to have and where to have them in the video. I also had to include the certain
shots required (both the rules, match on action and shot-reverse-shot).
Post -production
My strength in post-production was the editing on the mac. I have experience in using the Mac but at that time I found of about the new version of IMovie which was my weakness as I wasn't that confident in using it but I did get help when using it and I was taught how to us it. I could have improved this piece of work by adding in music. I improved in this area by making sure I knew how to use iMovie and other software’s before using it for the actual opening sequence footage.

Research and planning
During research and planning, we made a storyboard for all the shots to go into and wrote down information such as the type of shot it is, location and the lighting. This helped us when it came to filming. For research, I looked into the different shots that we are meant to use in the continuity exercise and the editing techniques. The strengths of this was that the planning kept us organised in terms of which shots to film when and the research gave us an idea of what the shots should look like. The weakness would be that we had to add or take away a few shots that we said we would do in the planning as they didn’t go as well as we thought.

Evaluation(Part 7) - What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Monday, 6 May 2013

Evaluation(Part 6) - How did you attract/address your audience?

Evaluation(Part 5) - How does your media product represent particular social groups?

The film 'Framed' represents certain social groups through the archetypes and stereotypes using camera angles, Mise-en-scene, sound, expressionism, typography and editing.

The camera angles and shot represented the social group through the types of shots used. During this scene where the police officer asks Jay some questions as he is being arrested there are both low and high angles used. The angles we used created the different classes in the characters in the clip. The high angle shot of Jay represented him as being a working class person (not important) and low angle shot of the police officer represented him as being from high class. This shows the hierarchy in the type of people you would see in Britain as the police officer has the rights and normal people don’t. The archetypes would be shown through this too. The police officer is given the high status which would make him the boss. As Jay is a teenager in the opening sequence, a stereotype is shown. The stereotype is that teenagers are dangerous and they always get in trouble for having drugs or something else illegal.

There is a point of view shot of what Jay is seeing as he walks down the stairs towards the basement. This shot makes it seem that the audience are in Jay’s shoes and are walking down the stairs. This would make the audience feel like they are able to relate to him. This would create the idea to the audience that maybe they aren't that different from Jay.

When the police officer comes in, we can see that more of the screen time is given to him over jay which makes him more important. The continuity keeps the film smooth and brings in verisimilitude. The editing in this clip was vital as it creates the continuity. The continuity in the music and sound is important as it can change the atmosphere of the scene and how the audience portrays it

The sound of Jay's voice in the clip was over taken by some of the background noise when he was in the basement. This connotes that he didn't have that status and that he wasn't that important there.
The location tells the audience a lot about the character. The basement is a dark, dirty place. You can tell from Jay's facial expressions that he hasn't been there before. This backs up the point of teenagers being bad as Jay enters a room which he shouldn't be in.

The lighting we had was either natural or already at the location. This brought in more verisimilitude into the film. The location we filmed at was quite dark inside but outside it was quite light. This might connote at he's actions are wrong as he goes down the stairs as the lighting gets darker.

Evaluation(Part 1) - Brief

The brief we were working towards was to create a 2 minute opening sequence for British audience aged between 16-24 year olds for Film 4. The film had to keep up to their standard of films and portraying Britain how it really is.  We had to use the right type of genre, themes and situations for the target audience to be met such as having current issues that are in Britain in present time. These themes would be the drug use in teenagers and how it has affected their life along with alcohol, violence, sex and poverty. As it had to be aimed towards the target audience age, the film had to appeal to them and have character which the audience can relate too which is what we did as we had a teen age boy in that age range as the main character, who gets into trouble. Many people would be able to relate to this as they could have been in the same situation.

In the opening sequence we show Jay the main character walking into a basement where he has never been before to deliver a parcel. In that parcel there were drugs but he is unaware of that until he is caught by the police officer. The title 'Framed' connotes that someone will be framed which is what the film is about. This title is shown as soon as Jay gets arrested.
The title connoted the themes of real life situations as its about being framed. It shows the betrayal between people which is what British life is like. From the meaning of someone being framed the other themes that would come to mind would be violence and drugs and they are really common in this era and teenagers get in trouble from this.

Production log 9

This week was our final week of production. In this week we had completed all the scenes as we filmed the main scenes in the basement in our holidays. We had finished most of the editing but just needed to refine it. As we were almost done we got some feedback from our teacher about the work and she gave us feedback about re-filming it but with most shots and angles as that was what was lacking in our work so far.

The issue we had was that we had to re-film the shots again as we needed a better variety of shots. Another issue was the actors. The actors we needed weren't available so we used one of our partners to play the police officer. we thought we would have two officers in the scene to build the tension and make it seem like a proper scene but we lacked in actors.

We did have a problem with the SD card being corrupted resulting in us being able to access the footage. To overcome this issue, the shots we had, had to be re-filmed again. This shot we re-filmed was a majority of the opening sequence( 2 minutes). These scenes we re-filmed and put onto the Mac and had been edited.

On the day of the deadline, we completed the editing of the opening sequences and the music was found online. A problem we had was that we forgot about the Mac being booked with another group so they had break and lunch booked for their work but we had the lesson to do it on Thursday  After school the graphics were put on to the footage but there was a problem with it. This was that the graphic duration times could not be changed due to setting problems. but this issue was over come and the duration was changed. The music was added in after the graphics were completed.

On Fridays lesson, We watched other students opening sequence videos and gave them feedback of what their strengths were and what improvements they could have made etc. There wasn't enough time for our work to be shown so it will be shown next week.

production log 8

This week was the draft deadline. We got some feedback from our teacher the date before to get some advice on what improvements we can make. After giving us feedback we decided when to make those changes. The issue this week was that we had to re-film a lot of our work we did so far; which was all the scenes except the main scene in the basement. The next day was the deadline for our draft so we only showed the scenes that were good to use and took the other ones away. This is what we have so far.

The decisions we had to make after were about the changes our teacher told us to make and how we need to improve our work. we also planned our when we were all free to do the editing, graphics and music but our priority being that we film the shots when we are all free.

production log 7

This week the issue we had was a scene needed to be re-filmed because it didn't come out as good and we thought we would make it better. The dialogue also wasn't right and needed improving. Couldn't film the basement scenes as the actor we needed was then busy on those days so we did some editing and worked on the graphics. That was the only issue we had this week.
The decisions we had to make were to re-film those shots and improve the shots. We choose a time whenever we were all free to film again. The scene we re-filmed was the interrogation scene. We also change one of our location of this scene to suit it more. The new location was better than the old one as it fitted well with that room we needed it to be.

Production Log 6

This week, we started filming and started working with the graphic software we were going to use as the production has started. On the first day of production we planned out that we would spend 2 lessons on the car park scene in our production schedule but we actually took less time and finished it in  the first lesson. This allowed us to start using the new software for making graphics. The new software we started using is called live type. We spend the lesson going through some fonts using da-font and downloading them into live type on the Macs and then using the effects on software. We didn't really have any issues or problems this week.

Production Log 5

This week, in my group we started the pre-production. This is includes the narrative, treatment, location reccies, production schedule, call sheet and the shooting script.
What have been the key issues for your pre-production this week?
Some of the key issues we had this week during pre-production was to makes decisions on the storyline, plot and narrative and then the other documents. We had to decide about the narrative and the treatment. For the narrative we wrote out everything that would happen in the film from start to finish. We did this so we would know what needs to actually be in the opening sequence instead of having most of the film in the opening sequence as has happened with past students work. We then did the treatment. The treatment was other information which is needed for the pre-production. The treatment includes information about the title, target audience, ttechnology, representation, nnarrative, conventions, style& iconography and institution. The location reccies is the location sets where the opening sequence of our film will be filmed at. For the production schedule we had to see what dates we would film and edit and which scenes. The problem with this was knowing when we would have access to certain location and if they would be available at that time and there was also the problem of having to make certain days for different characters for when they were available. We didn't have any problems with the first call sheet. Some of the decisions we made was about the final locations where to film: we had 4 finalised locations. The way we overcame the other issues was by finding out when the cast was free to film and when we could use what room. From this we planned when we could do what scenes.

Walk to Chadwell Academy Car Park

production schedule 2013

Monday, 11 March 2013

Locations

Location 1:

The Chadwell Heath Academy basement.

Reason:

The reason why we picked this location was because the interior of the basement is very dark and gloomy - much like a British Social Realism movie. Its abandoned, not much happens in it which makes it an ideal place for the opening sequence due to the actions that take place. The whole point is that it is meant to be quiet so it seems like a place where potentially drugs can be sold.

Problems we might have:
One of the main problems we may have is the accessibility of the basement. We will have to ask the caretakers when the basement is available because other students may want to use it too. Other problems we may have is the lighting in the basement. The lights in the basement may not offer the type of image we want for our opening sequence. We may not have enough time given to film in the basement so might have to come back a few times.

Location 2:

Car Park (basement exterior)

Reason:
The reason we chose this location is because in our opening sequence we need to include someone looking from outside witnessing the protagonist being arrested. It also gives the audience someone else's perspective of what is going on and also provides the audience a better understanding of where the location is.

Problems we might have:
As it is a car park, it may be busy a lot of the time and there may be a lot of noise in that area too. This means we have to shoot at the least busy possible time to make sure there is no interruptions. We will need a car parked in a specific position so we can film from an over the shoulder position of the car. For this we might have to get permission from someone we know so they can position their car in the place we need it.

Location 3:
Hall

Reason:
The reason we chose this location was because at the end of our opening scene we see the protagonist going to court and being sentenced. We thought that the hall resembled a court room really well and was an ideal choice.

Problems we may have:
There may be exams or assembly's in the hall which means we have to be careful what time we film. Also we have to make sure that it is quite outside the hall too as we need there to be silence when filming in the hall.

Location 4:

Reason:
We needed this room as it resembled an interrogation room which we need for the opening.
Problems we may have:
Availability as we have to make sure no one is in the room when we are filming.

McKee's Classic Narrative Structure

Narrative:
Exposition:
Character one (the protagonist) is an ordinary guy with an ordinary job. He has an ordinary job of delivering packages to places and people and as he’s sixteen years old – he earns minimum wage. Character one is around five foot ten; he has around a medium length brownie/black hair and has a light complexion. His family is of working class which is the reason why he needs the delivering job that he currently has. Surprisingly, he got the job as his close friend used to work there when he was younger, although character one has never met his employer only talked to him through the phone and his payments are received by the employer’s assistant. He is what some people may call a ‘nerdy’ type of character and never hangs around with the wrong crowd and never thinks too much of himself – completely ordinary teenager with an everyday, boring mundane life. The Exposition starts off with character one delivering his packages in a basement in London, when his phone starts ringing.
Agents of Change:
Character two (antagonist) is the agent of change, the character who changes the protagonists whole life. Character two is the employer of character one – his boss. Not much is known about him, he is a mysterious character. His description is unknown and only speaks to character one over the phone and that is only if it is urgent.  One day while character one in delivering some packages in a basement, he phones character one.
Conflict complication
In this part of the film, we see the protagonist framed for delivering drugs and goes to jail. He was betrayed by the guy he was working for and is proven guilty in court when he was innocent. He spends 5 years of his life in jail. This part of the film will have the scenes of him getting caught, the court, and some jail scenes. He comes out after 5 years out for revenge.
Elaboration
5 years later he gets out of jail out to find the people who framed him and got him locked away.
This is the main part of the film and will be the longest. In this scene we see the guy come out of jail and hunt down all the people involved in framing him. It starts off with him coming out of jail and then going back to the basement. He gets into contact with his old mates and plans his revenge. He finds out about where the employer’s assistant lives and goes there with his mates to find out who his ex-employer is and where he is to get his revenge. This is part of the scene will contain scenes of violence and as a result will leave the employer's assistant in need of hospital. The protagonist will go through many different people to get his way to the top to find the main guy who framed him. There will be many different locations used here. This will also be many scenes involving alcohol and drugs to portray the stereotype of gangs. After when he finds the employer, there is a big fight scene between the protagonist and the antagonist.

Climax & Resolution
During the fight the protagonist and antagonist continue brawling; trading punches, and cursing each other, character one has been waiting 5 years for this moment where he finally can claim revenge! as they continue fighting they eventually break off of each other, they stare each other down, and character one walks away slowly, character 2 then draws a blade brutally stabbing character one in the back multiple times, killing him.

Coda
We see the protagonist to be dead, eventually the ambulance arrive, along with the police, and we see character one’s face covered with a white sheet, and also see character two arrested, and taken away in a police car; and character one finally claimed revenge, with a cost...

The treatment

Treatment for BSR Movie
Title
The title of the film would be Framed. This represents what the film will be about and is like a clue to the audience. Many BSR films have a simple name which tells something about the film which is why i have kept this one simple.

Identify Target Audience:
This film would be aimed towards a niche British audience. It would mainly be for males within the age range of 15-24 year olds. This would because the film would be more interesting to guys as there would be a lot of violence and males character are more dominant in the film. The other interests would be law, drugs, gangs and revenge. The class would be aimed towards people living in normal areas such as seven kings, ilford, newbury, Barking etc... These areas would be working class places. It would be aimed towards people living in these areas as the film would be set in these locations and the audience would be able to relate to the areas. Here is a link to work I recently did on Audience. This is primary research.

Technology
The technology I will need would be equipment such as cameras, tripod, mac to edit on with the imovie. the technology i will use when it comes to camera work would be a wide range of shots and angles were needed. This would make the film seem more interesting. There are also some limitations for what i can do such as using CGI and special effects. This would be because they aren't apart of BSR and don't have any verisimilitude  The other reason would be that it would be too expensive and we can only use what we have to make our film which has to be BSR.

Representation
Our main characters in our opening sequence will be working class, and approximately 16 years of age, his representation would be more ‘nerdy’ and less suspicious, he would have a light complexion and would be 5ft10, he is represented as an innocent character and is caught delivering parcels, containing drugs, but he doesn’t know this.
Our antagonist is mysterious, we do not know much about him, as he mainly speaks to the protagonist over the phone, he would have a deep and intimidating voice, and would be feared throughout this movie, the enigma built up for this character would make the audience feel intimidated due to his actions and ruthless personality.

Narrative
Our movie will be about a 16 year old teenager who will be working a part time job of delivering parcels, he is an ordinary person, and his family is working class, who looks less suspicious to the police and is completely unaware of what he is delivering. One day when he is preparing his packages for delivery, he is arrested, and is imprisoned for 5 years, even though he isn’t guilty. He is released from prison and plots revenge upon his employer, he finds his employer after going through many sources and brawls with him, eventually getting stabbed.

Conventions
How will you use the conventions of the BSR genre (conform/subvert)?
Some conventions we will use are real life sets in London. Other British Social Realism conventions that we will use are the use of unknown and untrained actors - us or other people we know. Our main protagonist is going to be working class which is another British Social Realism convention. Usually British Social Realism films contain a lot of fast paced rap and grime music. We will also use grime music (copyright free) which displays a convention. The type of camera shots and angles we will use are a lot of tiled and canted angles and use handheld shots. The camera frames will also look more rough. When editing, the contrast of the video will be lowered by 10% to provide it with that more dark, grimy feeling to it which conforms the BSR conventions. We will also use natural lighting.

Will you have any hybrid elements?
The only other hybrid elements we will have is a little bit of thriller in our opening sequence so we will try to build up some suspense and tension in the opening clip.

Style & Iconography
How will you use camerawork to create an effect for the audience?
We will use the gimey type of camerawork used in British Social Realism movies. This means there will be lots of tilted an canted angles. Also a lot of handheld shots will be used to capture the realness and rough true aspect of Britain. This will help to create an effect for the audience that they are there witnessing the film taking place in first person.

How will you use editing to create an effect for the audience?
One of the main things we will do in the editing is to drop the brightness of the video by 10% which will again provide that more dark, rusty feel to it which will create the effect on the audience of experiencing the real Britain creating verisimilitude.

How will you use costumes/props as visual signifiers for the audience?
We will use costumes and props in our opening sequence. From these the audience can tell alot about, for example the location of where the film is taking place just from the costumes. We will also use props as appropriate to the character in the opening sequence which could connote to the audience what the personality of the character is. For example if the character is carrying a weapon the audience can connote from the prop that the character may be violent and has bad intentions.

How will you use costumes.props as visual signifiers for the audience?
We will use sound similar to what is commonly used in British Social Realism movies. For example a lot of grime is used so we may use grime too. We will also use real life sounds and no sound effects as it rarely happens in British Social Realism and it makes it creates a more believable experience for the audience.

Institution
Our movie would be distributed by Film 4, as it would meet their conventions, of having a low production budget, unknown directors, and unknown actors- also the movie would be aimed at a nice market and wouldn't be produced expecting a profit, but more to convey a message of life in Britain, we would exhibit this movie at film festivals to build slow word of mouth promotion, and also in small niche cinemas such as Picture House as they’re known for exhibiting independent movies.
